Welcome to North San Diego County's wine destination center. Learn about wine with San Diego’s most respected wine educator, Dominic Colangelo in the intimate surroundings of the bistro at Friars Folly Wine Cellar.

THE CLASS

Have fun, make new friends and learn about wine. You’ll meet new friends and sample the foods of one of North County’s most talked about chefs – Friars Folly Wine Cellar’s Chef Chad Norman.

The class format includes lectures with video clips of famous wine regions, flip chart presentations of regional maps and relevant information. You’ll learn about the wine’s regional culture, geography, climate, soils, laws regulating the production of the wine, winemaker’s techniques and more. You will receive a “Certificate of Completion” for each class that is valuable to impress employers in the hospitality or wine industry business; or just as a memento that you’ve learned a little more about wine. We provide glasses, instructional materials and judging sheets. Please refrain from wearing perfume or cologne when attending tasting events.

Classes begin promptly at the time stated. You are also welcome to stay and enjoy the live music and European ambiance that Friars Folly wine Cellar provides after the class.

" Il Dottore” - Professor of Wine

Dominic Colangelo

Considered the Dean of Wine Educators in Southern California, Il Dottore is a charter member of the "Society of Wine Educators" and has been teaching wine classes for 30 years at accredited universities and colleges including UCSD, the reputable Culinary Department of Grossmont College, the Mira Costa College Horticulture department and various Elderhostel Programs. He has launched many “ a San Diegan” into careers in wine and fulfilling lifetime hobbies for wine enthusiasts.

He was the co-director of the 1st San Diego National Wine Competition which has now become recognized as one of the premier national wine competitions. He has frequently judged wines for this distinguished competition; as well as being on the panel of judges for "America's Gold Medal Wine Awards".

Mr. Colangelo was a wine consultant for the Forum, the Mascone Convention Center, Del Mar Racetrack, San Diego Sports Arena, Qualcomm Stadium, Atlas Hotel Corporation and the Bureau of Naval Personnel Mess Management Program. His vast wine knowledge is sought after by serious wine collectors who seek his advice on designing and selecting wines for their cellars.

Il Dottore is a fascinating and captivating instructor. He will amuse you with stories of his adventures and commentaries on life in general. Worldly, he has traveled the famous vineyards of the world; and was the leader of the “Big Band” at the prestigious Hotel del Coronado where they played for the privileged guests of the historical hotel including presidents and dignitaries from around the world and backed up the likes of Sammy Davis Jr., and played on the same bill as Tony Bennett and the Charlie Daniels Band.
