Friars Folly Wines

Our goal at Friars Folly is to make wine fun and approachable; never intimidating or pretentious. The wines at Friars Folly are carefully selected to provide diversity and value. About half of our 100+ wine list are bottles of wine under $25.00. California and the Pacific Northwest are well represented, as well as most of the other major wine-producing regions of the world.

All the wines at Friars Folly are available to consume on premises or to purchase as retail to take home or for the perfect gift.

Through the ages, wine has been a beverage of pleasure and enjoyment. The Spanish Franciscan Friars that established the Mission system in California produced wine for the sacrament and as their beverage of choice. In fact, their efforts at wine making were so successful; they created an entire industry from their wine – selling it to the soldiers, residents of the pueblos and early California explorers. Most of the wine made was in the southern Californian Missions. In fact, the first California wine exported to Europe was from Mission San Diego. Padre Junipero Serra planted the first wine grapes in California at Mission San Diego and Mission San Juan Capistrano around 1770.

Local wines from San Diego, Guadalupe Valle in Baja Mexico and Temecula wines hold a special place at Friars Folly. Our local winemakers have come a long way in creating wines specifically suited to our Mediterranean climate. They are excelling in the Rhone, Spanish and Italian grape varieties that share similar growing conditions. In fact, two of California’s oldest continuing operating family owned wineries are located in San Diego County – the Bernardo Winery established 1889 in Rancho Bernardo and the Ferrara Winery in Escondido.

Visit the historical Bernardo Winery and step back into history by peeking into the wine storage room. By supporting these wineries, your consumer dollars help to encourage more of this industry locally that provides for more acres planted in vineyard and saved from development and broadens our tourism based dollars that support our economy. Sadly enough, some of wines are becoming extinct. Enjoy the Hart Winery Grenache Rose Reprieve made from grapes that come from a vineyard that is being uprooted for an airport. The Reprieve is that the development has been delayed, so Joe Hart has been able to produce another vintage of this award-winning rose for us to enjoy.

Local Micro-Brewed Beers on Tap

At Friars Folly, we like to support our local micro brewers. You will always find a rotation of four different micro-brews on tap: Stone Brewing Co., Coronado Gold, Solomon of the Sea, Anvil Alesmith and more - ask your server what's on tap!
